Generalnie rzecz biorąc Kristofferson nagrał album koncepcyjny, odnoszący się w swoim wymiarze do spraw politycznych i przede wszystkim wspierający w swoim wydźwięku poglądy lewicowe. Otwarcie wsparł m.in. na tym albumie Nelsona Mandelę oraz Sandinistów.

Od strony komercyjnej nie było to przedsięwzięcie udane, po części również dlatego, że tydzień przed premierą Third World Warrior wydano drugi album supergrupy country The Highwaymen's, której członkiem był Kristofferson.
